Men’s Sexual Abuse Treatment

Note: Let people know what treatment methods are available at innova & how they can benefit from using them to cope with trauma

It’s time to put away shame and take on healing

Sexual abuse happens to boys and men at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, men are often too ashamed to come forward so that they can receive the support they need to heal. Whether it happened in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, the impact can run deep. Innova offers a safe, confidential space where men can process their experiences, find support, and start building a path forward at their own pace, from the comfort and safety of your own home.

If you are in a crisis or any other person may be in danger – don’t use this site. Call the National Sexual Assault Hotline.

What is Men’s Sexual Abuse?

Men’s sexual trauma refers to any unwanted sexual experience that causes physical, emotional, or psychological harm, regardless of when it occurred or the relationship to the perpetrator. This includes, but is not limited to:

Childhood sexual abuse

Abuse that occurs during formative years can lead to long-lasting effects on identity, self-worth, and interpersonal relationships. Many survivors suppress these memories until adulthood, when the impact begins to surface in the form of anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges.

Sexual assault or rape

Whether perpetrated by a stranger, acquaintance, or partner, sexual assault can leave men feeling powerless and violated. Survivors may struggle with intense shame, anger, or fear, often worsened by social stigma that says “men can’t be victims.”

Sexual coercion or manipulation

Some survivors are pressured or manipulated into sexual activity through guilt, intimidation, or authority dynamics, especially in military, religious, or athletic environments. These forms of trauma often go unrecognized but are deeply impactful.

Sexual harassment or exploitation

Repeated exposure to degrading or objectifying sexual behavior, particularly in the workplace or during incarceration, can create trauma responses such as hypervigilance, self-doubt, and emotional withdrawal.

Breaking the Silence Around Men’s Sexual Trauma

Yes, it happens to men. Sexual abuse is more common than people think. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), 1 in 33 men in the U.S. has experienced an attempted or completed rape. But the actual number is likely higher. Many men never tell anyone.

1 in 6 men have experienced sexual abuse or assault in their lifetime.

Nearly 25% of men experience contact sexual violence.

1 in 10 rape victims are men.

52% of male survivors were assaulted before age 25.

What to Expect

How Men Experience and Internalize Sexual Trauma

Men who have survived sexual trauma may experience a wide range of emotional, psychological, and behavioral effects. These reactions are valid and common, even if they don’t look like what most people expect trauma to “look like.”

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Detachment
  • Emotional Numbness
  • Flashbacks
  • Guilt
  • Hypervigilance
  • Nightmares
  • Self-Blame
  • Sexual Confusion
  • Shame
  • Trust Issues

Why Innova Is the Right Place for You

There is no “right” way to respond to sexual trauma. Some men feel numb. Others feel overwhelmed by anger, shame, fear, or confusion. Some bury it for years, only to have it surface later in relationships, work, parenting, or mental health struggles. However it shows up for you, it matters.

Innova Recovery Center is a safe, affirming space where male survivors of sexual trauma can receive expert care from clinicians who are deeply trained in trauma, including the unique needs of men. Healing starts with breaking the silence, you don’t have to do it alone.

We offer:

  • Evidence-based treatment including EMDR, DBT, and trauma-focused CBT
  • Virtual and in-person therapy options for accessibility and comfort
  • Group therapy with other male survivors to break isolation and build support
  • Individualized treatment plans rooted in compassion, respect, and science
  • A nonjudgmental, shame-free environment where your healing matters

You are not alone, and you are not broken

Many male survivors feel isolated in their pain, believing no one will understand or even believe them. At Innova, we know the truth: men can be victims of sexual trauma.
