Signs of Military Trauma

Military trauma can show up in ways you might not expect—and sometimes, it doesn’t hit until long after the experience. Whether it’s from combat, a tough deployment, or something that left a deep impact, trauma can affect how you think, feel, and connect with others. If you’ve been feeling off or like something just isn’t right, it’s okay to take a closer look. Here are some common signs that military trauma might be affecting you or someone you care about.

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories of combat or traumatic events
  • Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
  • Hypervigilance or feeling constantly on edge
  • Irritability, anger, or sudden mood changes
  • Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that are reminders of trauma
  • Difficulty trusting others or forming close relationships
  • Guilt, shame, or self-blame
  • Trouble concentrating or staying focused
  • Increased use of alcohol or substances to cope
  • Struggles with transitioning to civilian life
  • Physical symptoms like headaches, stomach issues, or chronic pain without a clear medical cause
